The Vagus Nerve: The Bridge Between Mind and Body
The vagus nerve is one of the most important communication pathways between the brain and the body. It plays a key role in regulating heart rate, digestion, emotional wellbeing, and the body's ability to move out of stress and into a calmer state.
Research shows that slow, diaphragmatic breathing can increase vagal activity and improve heart rate variability — both recognised indicators of a more balanced and regulated nervous system. Studies have also found that slow breathing can reduce feelings of anxiety whilst increasing parasympathetic activity.
This is one reason why breathwork is such a powerful tool in both yoga and workplace wellbeing.
The breath is one of the few systems in the body that is both automatic and voluntary. By changing the way we breathe, we can influence the way we feel.
